AYI 077 (The Leyland Brothers S11a 109)

Have officially settled AYI 077 at approximately 6:30pm 15/02/10 and got it home 2AM on the 16/02/10.

It all traveled home well with the help of a car trailer.
The Rego ran out 4/02/10 so will have to sort the well being of the original number plates very soon! As covered here Starting a thread on AYI-077



Mechanically appears in fair shape for its vintage. I'll take it for a run today to see how it behaves and have a listen for any issues before standing it down for the long haul.

The main concerns for a start will be to repair the chassis,lower door frames and bulk head firstly. Wile that goes along the diffs asys,brakes and steering can get fully overhauled if needed. The clutch feels horrible as most GMH conversions are

I'm still chasing up some info from the previous owner (overseas ATM) as they purchased it from the Leyland Brothers.

Quick suggestion for the No. plates, get a high quality laser printed copy and laminate them then put the laminated copy inside a numberplate holder with a glass/ perspex cover and keep the originals inside your house. Former boss had HSV ### as his number plates and got sick off them being stolen so did this as it only cost him $5 to replace instead of the RTA rip off . This is not strictly legal but the cops could never tell and he was pulled over far more in his hsv than you would ever be in a landie!

Also talk to your accountant and see if you can write off your expenses/repairs and interest on the purchase as an investment?
You may never want to sell it but you could claim that your investment is increasing in value!

Had a closer look in detail this morning and took it for a run. No horrible noises or vibrations and the GMH and gear box are sweet as. Clutch is nasty though Very sudden.

Ran it up to 55 mph and surprisingly pleasant to drive. steers OK and brakes work quite well.

The chassis has had some fairly ordinary work done over the years including the demise of the lift it had. It was chopped off and welded back on. Had plate welded over the bottom rails so has trapped moisture and rusted. Two of the out riggers are almost beyond it as well. All repairable or on the case of the out riggers replaceable. Has had a new rear X member recently.

Firstly get it very mechanically roadworthy and deal with any structural rust.

As others have pointed out we have to be careful with restoration of this as can lose its appeal.

Hope to get it back to how they had it in the "off the beaten track" days.

Change the shackles and hangers back.

Get all the bar work back on.

Re-manufacture the water tanks in the front guards

Find the original bonnet or fit one with the spare tyre carrier.

Do the cut on the front guards as they had at on stage.
Fit the rear tyre carrier.

Try to find similar of exactly the same tyres.

A few other things I may have missed of don't know about yet.

The interior is a hard one to leave as is...
The upholstery really needs to be replaced.
Everything rubber has perished from age including door seals,window seals etc.
Some of the aftermarket gauges are buggered so may have to renew the lot.
Rust in the door frames, Window channels, bulk head and front foot wells so once all repaired we are going to have to respray it unfortunately.


I will put some pics together soon that will help describe its current condition more accurately.

Yes, I do need to tidy the signature up a little Or just put something in that another member has quoted
