Dan,
Hello again from Brisbane.
I seem to recall that the BP in Oxley Rd suburb of like name were a rental outlet for trailers, including tandem car trailers. May well still do - I could check.
Not sure what the lesser of two evils actually is - driving a Series 1 700 odd kms or towing a loaded tandem trailer the same distance.
Not sure if you have actually been to Coolatai before, but you may know the region well from UNE days.
The last time that I drove between Moree and Brisbane, I actually came through Warialda to Yetman and on to Texas and Stanthorpe via Glenlyon and thence to Brisbane via Killarney - all in a diesel 4 X4 of Japanese providence.... Coolatai is roughly mid-way between Warialda and Yetman. All very scenic and a great drive.
The region is aptly named the north west slopes and New England Tableland for good reason - there being more than the odd windy bit with hills scattered thereabouts. The Stanthorpe to Texas leg is quite hilly as are parts from Yetman to Texas away from the river and floodplain.
The Bruxner from Tenterfield to Yetman is not too bad as is the more northerly route via Leyburn and Inglewood to Yetman.
So, not entirely sure that towing a vehicle through there is any great shakes either. But then it's a fair old ask of a 60 year old vehicle too. Just one opinion of many and no doubt will be open to challenge and others' experiences.
Cheers,
Neil
