always made me wonder why they bother auctioning burnt out shells like that..... would be a lot less drama sending it straight to the crusher.....

Ouch! That is indeed my ex-D3. I hadn't seen the photos of the shell - only the remnants left at site after the front end loader scooped up most of the bits. The fire is a good indicator of what happens when 110 litres of petrol + 2 spare tyres directly above the fuel tanks (one a near-new MTR, the other a worn out Scorpion Zero) can get burning. Curiously enough the Mitchell West hitch and the Locksafe installed in the hitch look okay (but I don't want it back). I suspect that the key inside the safe may be a bit worse for wear though. The engine looks as melted as the cops described to me. The oil pan was a molten blob on the ground left there after the shell was towed off.
A couple of years I had a bit of an EPB "incident" where the RR brake dragged, causing a tyre to catch slightly on fire and the rubber oversleeve on the fuel line to smoulder. Makes me even more glad that we had the chance to pour water on the red-hot brake and prevent a fire.
I have a new D4 on order (turns out the gov't car purchase incentive + the insurance payout kept me cash neutral) for delivery in April - so I expect to see it in May. Life goes on.
are you going to kit the new one,, from what was left to see you had some good bars and stuff on it, did you get the new 5Lits abit of a change from the 4.4L

I'm getting a 3.0 diesel. The reason I had a V8 D3 was that it was one of the early orphaned D3 V8's with only 5 seats and I got it for $18k less than a diesel back then (and maybe spend an extra $3k on fuel so came out way ahead). I only want 5 seats but don't want to pay a premium for a petrol engine this time. I am planning to get rock sliders, underbody alloy protection, aux fuel tank, 2nd battery somewhere, and a hidden winch (maybe hydraulic), Kaymar rear + 2 spares, but probably no roo bar. The original D3 roo bar was because someone ran into me 2 yrs ago and their insurer got me the roo bar + winch free (it cost less than the OEM LR items). Since it was someone in my household who left the back door unlocked that the sc@m theives entered, SWMBO is being totally accepting of the cost of any modifications and I might as well get it done before there's a policy change!
From the sales pitch, the 0-100 time for the diesel is probably about the same as my V8 was with the extra weight of a bullbar up front. I'll have to do some testing. I will miss the wonderful roar out the RAI when flying up sand dunes though....

In case any one is interested, I've put in pictures of what my stolen and burnt D3 looked like. I suspect it is now a crumpled wad in a container heading to China for re-cycling. Our wonderful machines can indeed burn easily. I've decided I'll be putting the fire extinguisher very close at hand in the soon-to-arrive () D4.
