Thread: Identifying an old Warn winch

Hi Sprint,
Similar motor position, with hawser instead of rollers, the wheel thing to the left is similar if i pretend its not coated in surface rust, and the black box is distinctly a different shape. Right side bracket appears to be a different casting too. Remote is the same though.
I've been looking at Warn sites and thats the only one (8274-50?) with the same motor placement I have found, so thought it might have been an out-of-production winch.
Being 20 odd years or older, were there any other Warn models with that same motor position?

I'd take a photo but its not easy to access and tangled in wire rope+sawdust, in a crate...

It sounds like either an 8274 or its predecessor. Either way, one of the best winches made.

I take it that it is appropriate for a 110 then? You know, for pulling out Toyotas...
Guess I better put it on the queue for a rebuild

Winch Identification

given the description, it could well be a earlier m8274, the -50 has only been around since about 1998 afaik

'fraid not Sprint, much much more like the Warn in the photo you posted. Mine might look different to the 8274 because of missing shrouds, but im pretty sure you picked the right one first go.
I do like the band brake on the Bellview, reminds me of the steam logging winches of old

EDIT 2=> i'm a clever trevor sometimes, I now know the difference is the -50 designation

I should also add that the control box in the first photo is a much later one, normally they're a plain black box with a raised W with the remote socket in the middle of the W

the gear casing on the left of the winch looks different to what i recall the earlier ones looking like too, but pretty much you either have a pre ~1998 m8274 or or less possibly a bellview

is it suitable..... well.... IMO its one of the finest winches thats ever been bolted to the front of a Landrover, and in the words of a local ARB rep "An 8274? nah, only the competition boys use them".... make what you want of that!

It does sound a lot like the pre 1998 version m8274-you've described the black box bit well. I just looked at some sites with Warn Bellviews and the original Bellview, and its not quite those two.
Better not tell my boss he gave me a good'un for nix or he'll make me work harder!
