ID go a diesel....
I don't like the idea of too many electronics off road. I currently drive a twin carb V8 Rangie for play, I normally ride my motorbike for transport.
I like that this has few electronics for mud, water or time to cause me problems when off-roading.
I am looking to get a Disco and there seem to be many running on and off road. I dont really want a computer. Am I just being silly? Will I be breaking down trying to find a fault?
Can I retro fit Carbies to it and bypass the ECU and many of the sensors that go with it? Should I just make sure I get a diesel?

While technically feasible (they came as such in the UK) it is not legal in Australia to remove the EFI and retrofit carburettors.
I also think it would be a waste of time and money. My RRC has never left me stranded due to an EFI fault.
Disco are better than rangies for computer probs
If it was me I would'nt retro fit carbs your fuel usage will increase and you will have all sorts of teething probs.
Or you could get a um diesel

Plenty of V8 disco's on here, you are more likely to have an ignition problem (amplifier ) than with the efi components.

Apart from the (noted) problem with ignition amps, another occasional problem is the EFI fuel pump, especially if it is over 150 000km old. Replace or carry a spare. It's not hard to get at under the hatch in the back floor. Nothing much else is going to strand you with an EFI D1.
Thanks for the replies. It seems as though I am worrying too much about the EFI. Which I had pretty much guessed anyway.
I have seen many cars come in to the workshop on tilt trays due to one sensor or another having failed.
I agree that a diesel would be better.
The main reason for looking at Petrol model is the purchase price, that and that manual V8s are more readily available than in diesel.
Don't forget that they sound so much better as well!!!!!!!!![]()
