This should be ok to do are all the plugs the same and will it wire up the same if so id be putting it in and trying it at least and then run the usual checks of output and such and if all is good run with it![]()
How important is it that the right alternator be used for the VIN of your Disco.
I have a 1997 300TDI. I bought an alternator for "a 1997 Discovery 300TDI" which turned out to be an AMR4248. When I (finally) got the dead alternator out, it was an AMR5245. Now, they look identical. Both are 100amps, both have the same sized pulley, the mounts are the same.
I checked MicroCat, and it said that for my VIN I should be using an AMR5245. Does it really matter? I'm without a car at the moment (as the car is without an alternator) and I'd really like to just drop the part I have in rather than go another few days without it, but I don't want to break anything.
I'd be grateful for any advice.

Al the plugs are the same, in fact, if it wasnt for minor case difference, you'd think they were identical
Scouter, it is more than likely to do with superceded numbers rather than unsuitable alternators. I haven't seen any reason why, apart from pulley diameter changes early(up to 1996) and late(1996 on), that there is any operating differences between 300Tdi Disco alternators.
As long as the plugs are connected the same etc go for it

Get a spade fitting that fits the new alternator and crimp it on to the wire that has the old fitting, should be able to get one at any Auto parts/leccy, Regards Frank.
Ok, I've got the alternator on. My only problem now is that I can't raise the drive belt tensioner pulley to get the belt back on. I try and turn the pulley retaining bolt like the manual says, but the bolt just undoes.
Any ideas?
Got the belt back on. Its easy from here![]()
