You arn't wrong there mate, what was ford thinking!steve_35 Thats cool just make sure the marks are the same or you will never be able to time it
I have done the same deal took me a week till i called a mechanic and we had to remove the entire front of the motor to remove the balancer and remark the new one as it was way out
i just assumed they were a mass produced item all identical but apparently not
When I lined up the timing mark from the EL harmonic balancer to the timing case pointer, the Key way from the balancer to crank was 180 deg different to the EF one.

Why did they not use the best one when they made the engine? This has been a long and continuing fault with Falcon engines. I had a leaky one at 140,000 and the engine reconditioner who checked the head for flatness, corrosion and hardness says the problem is because Ford use "cheap, ****, gaskets". The other continuing fault with these heads is the propensity for velocity corrosion at Cylinders 5/6. Long known and long ignored by Ford.

I arted around again today, and the damn thing wouldn't start. I ran a timing light on it and cranked the engine. The timing was out by appox 10 Deg ADTC.
I pulled the timing cover off again and also on the old engine. Then it became apparent that that the nothes on the gears and pulleys were different on each engine. So that's why it won't fire. The timing alignment dot marks were aprox 45deg different than the EF gears. Hence every thing was out of sequence for the coil packs cam angel sensor.ELs had Dizzies so the timing system must be different.
I swapped all 3 timing sprockets and chain over and everything now lines up. Tomorrow I refit the time case and hopefully she'll be mobile again.
Seems a waste of time now as I was committed to this project and the insurance company rang today to say it will most probably be written off due to recent hail damage.![]()
