I suspect this could be oil in the ecu wiring harness. Do a search here there are lots of discussions. Pretty common issue and fairly easy to fix .
Mine had similar symptoms and has this issue.
Hi I have a 2000 td5 and it started to run on 4 cylinders. I have pulled the rocker cover off and found #3 is not firing. Is this a common fault and can anyone tell me if they have had a similar problem.
Thanks Ivan

Yea I would vote oil in the harness. Try a quick clean of the injector harness. If it works for a while then bingo you have the answere.
Yep tried that didnt change it at all, Could it be an ecu problem or would this type of fault take out all of the injectors, might have closer look at ecu harness from outside of head to ecu as I only cleaned the internal harness. will keep trying just have to drive wrx to work for a while
. Also still no fault lights on dash is that normal
Thanks Ivan

Ivan, from what I have read, the oil can be syphoned all the way back to the ecu. Cleaning the plug may not be enough. If it is bad, it may be easier just to replace the loom.

No warning lights when did it. Was powering up the M5 when it felt like a jack hammer. Thought I had done the front suspension. The main plug to clean is the one between the head and the outside loom. Had to clean mine 3 times on a 2000km trip before I gothome and changed it.
Take the red plug off the ECU, remove the white facia panel and see if there is any oil in there.
A mechanic aquaintance in Cooma had a Defender fault recently with oil in the harness. He had to resort to replacing the wiring loom from the ECU to the injector loom to fix the problem.

When he enquired about stock on the item, the supplier was holding about 70 of these looms in stock - must be a commonly replaced part.

Replace the injector harness loom while your in there, then clean the plugs as advised, if oil is evedent anywhere. LR advise replacing the whole engine harness if oil is in the loom. They would too wouldn't they, the buggers!? And charge a ridiculous price for it!
Also check you coolant level and then you credit card limit if it has "mysteriously disapeared".

Hi guys, it looks like I will have to take it in to get the ecm read for faults as I have changed the injector harness, cleaned all the plugs on the ecm and still it will only run on 4 cylinders. Will keep you informed of what is found.
thanks to all Ivan
