    Question Td5 temp gauge fluctuating

    The symptoms:

Mostly, the temp gauge moves just in to the normal range at start-up, and then up to a little over horizontal when the engine warms up. However it sometimes stays at the lower position.

For example, yesterday, it dropped to the lower position (not cold, but just in 'normal') as we drove up a long (say 20Km) winding road (for anyone local it was to Copperlode Dam outside Cairns).

After walking around doing the tourist but for a while, we started up again and it went almost straight to just above horizontal, but dropped back quickly. During the day it went up and down a few more times.

Today, I've only had it out for a quick run, but saw nothing un-usual about it!

I was debating with myself whether this was a stuck thermostat, but didn't expect it to change while driving. If it's stuck it should stay stuck!! Now I'm thinking, if an air bubble was lodging near the temp sender, that could be the problem.

    All thoughts gratefully received

    Dave

I'd purge it to see if there is air in the system.

Also when you can, buy yourself a coolent temp and low level alarm monitor, DON'T trust the factory temp guage.

    fluctuating temp gauge

Exactly the same symptoms, thermostat stuck open..luckily.

Not too expensive, but a bit difficult to access.

The fluctuation I guess is related to the load on the engine varying.

mine did that as well found it to be a faulty electrical connection at the sender

Bleed screw and have the expansion tank above the bleed screw when bleeding/purging.

    Thanks Baz,

I've loosened the bleed screw, no air, just coolant.

So, spoke to a parts supplier/Mechanic. He says flush the radiator, esp with the 200K I've got on mine. The Thermostat was only about $32, so probably do both while I'm at it.

Just spoke to local supplier, about $50 for the Thermostat, and he has to order it!

Take off the connector from the sender and give it a good clean with CO then let it completely dry before putting it back on.

This was the issue I had and thats how it was fixed..

I don't if this correct or not but when I changed my coolant, I did it as described above with the engine running a well.
