I crossed the Simpson with a 1.3t camper in my chipped TD5, worst economy was 17l/100k on the second day of the crossing.
Actually 17l/100k is the worst I have ever had in the Disco, best was 11.3l/100 towing the camper.
Compare that to my friend coming into Birdsville from Charleville to Windorah then Birdsville, flat gravel road towing a camper with an 80series Cruiser petrol, 30l/100:eek:
Baz.
I have heard of people coming back from 6 month touring holidays 5 months early because the fuel budget was blown in the first month towing...:o
Makes a V8 disco sound quite attractive in comparison for fuel economy.....
I have a customer who bought a 1998 D1 V8 to tow his van, and aswell as being a better ride etc, he sold his thirsty and unreliable 80 series petrol and hasn't looked back. He'll be buried in his Disco:p

One year I crossed the Simpson in a 2wd car (V8 P76) on 15psi oversized radials and I got 18mpg / 16L/100km . I left barely perceptible ruts. I followed the tracks of a bunch of crazily overloaded cruisers which left 8 inch ruts on every hill and were obviously swaying wildly. I am convinced they were running 40 psi. When they pulled off, I passed their camp and went on into the dusk for 1/2 an hour. Next morning I started early and the track was firm as. This was in August 1996.
I am sure that reducing tyre pressures correctly could halve your fuel consumption on a desert crossing.
My Chev 350 powered Landie was put together with desert travel in mind.
It had 3 long range tanks & 100 litre water tank.
It needs it:(.
I get 20 litres/100klm around town on petrol & 28/100 on LPG ( It's tuned for petrol)
Even so, I save 10 bucks a 100klm on gas :p
I haven't been keeping good records but heavily loaded & doing 60% 4x4 it drops to 38/100 on gas. Still should be able to get across the Simpson OK.. I have ( need?) 180l LPG & 150L petrol in tanks & another 60l jerrycan storage under the tray:eek:-- and deep pockets:angel:
I drove my V8 disco in 4th at um very high speeds and returned 22L/100k ( I was passing alot of traffic and was 3/4 loaded)

I'm not lying when I say this,I crossed from Kalgoorlie to Pt Aguster in 17hrs and had the cruise set at 140km/hr and averaged 10.4ltrs per 100 in the L322.It does mid 8ltres if I stay at 100. Pat
A friend of the Inlaws bought a petrol 100 series and headed off on there trip, they turned around at Alice springs and drove back to the Hunter Valley, traded it in on a 100 series T/diesel and started again. He tells everyone how happy he is because of the money he's saving. He doesn't talk about the 130,000 dollars he spent to use 5 less litres per 100. Pat
he's an idiot for even considering a 200 series
if I was in the position to buy a 100 series (yes, i love my landies, but if i could afford to do it, i'd still buy a 100 series wagon too), my pick would be a 2006 turbodiesel 5 speed automatic VX
the worst i could manage with one was 13L/100km, and that was while i was having a bit of high speed fun.....
and yes, a turbo diesel landcruiser wagon WILL do 180+, and feels disgustingly stable at that speed.....
apparently being sensible, cruise at 100km/h with a family and luggage on board, they will do 10L/100km on the highway........
btw Pat, tell your mate to put a decent exhaust on it, K&N filter and a snorkle, it should drop his fuel consumption down to ~15L/100km
