    TD5 surge at light throttle

My TD5 Disco surges dangeriously at about 1K rpm.
The throttle is light, blip it while driving and then imediatly blip it again.
The surge produced is way stronger then what one can do with flooring the pedal and lasts about 2 to 3 seconds.
This some times produces a dangerious situatiopn as when going up or down and needs to keep the speed constant and low.
Just the general shaking of the vehicle with you right foot on the pedal produces this situatuion.

Has anybody had simmilar problems and where do I start to look?

    Kind Regards
    Rudolf

This is a turbo diesel trait that I have noticed in other makes as well.

Was explained to me as the light throttle application creating a lower pressure area around turbo that allows the turbo to spool faster which equals more power in a shorter than usual time.

Hi, I have found this in my 2000 TD5 manual D2 as well. Although (fortunately) it does not happen too often, I have been crawling very slow down a track and the vehicle just accelerates very quickly, for 1/2 to 1 second. Far quicker than if I just floor the accelerator. Sometimes I wish I had that all that power when I want it, not when some gremlin decides to. If I have passengers, I am constantly saying 'that wasn't me!'
Maybe it is a glitch with a sudden glut of fuel injected, I don't know.
Could this be a recall? Toyotas are being recalled for un-intended acceleration. Land Rover, of course, will say 'sorry, out of warranty, not our problem'.

Is this at tickover and the rpm dropped low?

If it is then its the anti-stall fuelling to keep the idle revs correct.

And not a recall, to be a recall it must affect several and endanger life dramatically

Happens at 1K rpm and when the throttle is pushed slightly, released and then pushed lightly again.
With the secong push the surge happens.
It's a bit scary especially when driving over small rocks.
Mostly this happens en level ground or going down hill.
    Never uphill.

    Hi Tombie,
It has been, from memory, roughly from idle. Perhaps in low 1st I have accidentally let it go under idle speed. But why wouldn't this feature work when I have stalled it plenty of times in high 1st?

It certainly hasn't happened around 1K revs like Rudolf.

BTW Tombie, I sent you a PM yesterday re chipping my D2. I don't know if you check PM's that often. Cheers
    Chris

First question, do you have a chip/remap

Is this in low range and off road

Mine does it in low range only with my old ECU in, I have a Bruce Davis chip in my old ECU.

With the newer D2a ECU and a Tombie2 remap I don't get it.

I spoke to Bruce about this and he said, yes I know about it and I can't fix it yet

So if you have a poer upgrade, this could be the problem.

    Baz.
    Cheers Baz.
