    TD5 wastegate questions

    Disco TD5 2000

I am not sure if the wastegate is working. nanocom shows 0% at any revs when stationary. I haven't tried it on the road yet - hard to read & drive at the same time.

The wastegate lever doesn't move when the engine is off - should you be able to move it, back & forwards?

How can you tell if the wastegate modulator is working?

thanks in advance for any help.

you would know if it was not working as the engine would cut out when the turbo produces to much boost, it is hard to move the push rod in there is a fairly strong spring inside the diaphram. I have to adjust mine as it sometimes over boosts cutting out the engine
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

I have just taken off the vacuum thingo, & the wastegate does move now, but was a little bit jammed at first, only goes thru about 70 degrees of turn which I guess is about right - should it go thru 90 degrees? The vacuum thingo seems to hold pressure by sucking on it & the spring is really strong.

The engine doesn't cut out as in too much boost but has reasonably bad turbo lag which I assumed was not enough boost.

im always adjusting my wastegate, i cant move my rod in or out,, the spring in there are really strong, as your asking about what it says on nano,, what your seeing is the boost modulator, the wastegate its self has no elecs on it,,

im not 100% but its hard to get the modulator to work just reving the engine, as there isent enough load to boost it up fully,

and if your complaining about turbo lag is yours a auto?

Now I would like to know how to check the adjustment of the wastegate? longer or shorter ? obviously you just screw it in or out, but what do you check ?

    thanks

Shortening the rod will increase the boost pressure. Generally on the wastegate actuator there will be a number such as 1.307 etc which indicates the pressure in bar of what the actuator was originally set to.
Adjust it 1/4 turn at a time.
You won't get much over about 1.4 bar before it starts cutting out.
Just remember that 1.4 is not absolute pressure it's 1.4 over atmospheric giving an absolute of 2.4bar.

    Cheers

    Andrew,
I had a look last night but no numbers that I can see. I noticed the numbers on PSIMPSON photos in another post about the head service. I did count the number (12) of treads on the shaft & reset it to the same

    thanks

taking your heatshield off makes it much easier to operate the pivot mechanism with a tool

I'm having a similar issue where I feel the turbo isn't doing it's thing correctly.
This thread looks like a good place to ask the following as it's related.
Nanocom hooked up and reading live values....
-What numbers should I be looking for with the wastegate?
I've got 0% at idle and @40% under normal driving.
-What should the difference between ambient and manifold pleasures be?

I read a long time ago of a temporary way of bypassing the electric modulator.
Does anyone know what it was?
Possibly hose from turbo-intercooler pipe direct to turbo wastegate valve?
Would this help isolate the problem?

    Cheers, Kyle.
