Trouble bleeding fuel line - 300TDi Defender

I have put a new fuel tank in the defender and it wouldn't stop sucking air, problem found, old sender leaking. Ordered a new sender and it leaked where the black outlet pipe joins the white mounting plate on the sender assy. Got another new sender and still can't get the air out.
I'm cracking the bleed screw on the fuel filter and hand pumping the fuel up till it is full. Then I'm cracking the union on the fuel return line from the injector pump and continuing to pump until it seems all the air is gone. Then I start it and crack each injector one at a time until the bubbles stop, then I get in and drive it and after about 100mtr it looses power and is full of air again.
    Any ideas??

    Sedimenter seal or drain plug?

The seal on the fuel sender is also a pain to get in firmly enough, don't think that causes air problems, just a leaky problem next time you fill up.

I'm getting to the point of checking the entire fuel line but nothing past the sender has been touched and it used to be perfect.

Could the fuel lift pump have failed and started letting air in because of all the hand pumping? It's probably original.

FOUND, I had a sneaking feeling that it was the lift pump and I went out to try and bleed it again and this time the pump lever was wet with fuel.

The manual lever can extend the diaphragm further than normal operation. Age hardened diaphragms can split when you do this - leading to diesel fuel contaminating/displacing lube oil in sump and ruined 300Tdi.
