    Servicing Series IIAs

    Gday

Well the Defender is out of action for a bit, so I'm borrowing a Series IIA Petrol off a mate of mine for the next fortnight or so.

Only condition is I have to service it

I'm only guessing but I imagine the diffs, transfer case and gearbox take 80w90 and I would just run a suitable oil for older petrol engines

Could you please correct me if I'm wrong

    Thanks

    Jock

Also you will need plugs and points

I would use Penrite HPR 30 for the engine and Hypoid 80-90 for the diffs which you could also use for the box but it may be better to use another type.

I used the hypoid in my box with no prob but in saying that landrover say engine oil is fine but that was a long time ago

If it still has the oil bath air cleaner don't forget to change that oil also plus adjust brakes and so on

Plus the usual grease and lubing of all joints and shafts (and no I was not being rude)

Don't forget to check steering box and steering relay. Also check at each service the condition of spring bushes and tie rod ends and tighten U-bolts.

A couple of things to note - leaking and loose drive flanges probably suggest loose wheel bearings, and weeping swivel seals suggest loose swivel pins.

80 90 for the steering box, relay box and everything related in moving the vehicle that doesnt have the word engine associated with it.

almost any 15/40 or 20/50 for the engine and oil bath air filter

points are just an inspect and plugs and leads generally make at least 50K Km before they give trouble.

valve check and adjustment (10 tho hot or cold)

    change the brake/clutch fluid

    grease everything with nipples

rotate the tyres, remove the drums and wash out any brake dust.

Having a problem with the oil pressure light, I'm hoping it's just a slightly blocked oil filter, as I drove it 10km home with the oil light on

Can someone let me know the filter number for a 2.25 petrol? (canister type)

I'll get the spare parts fella at work to get me a Fleetguard one tomorrow

    Thanks

Last time that happened to me it was the switch. (Have a gauge as well, so I know for sure). I would also suspect a wiring short.

Yeh I borrowed a gauge the other day, hooked it up cold and I was getting around 25-30 psi at idle and nearly 50 psi on full noise

Took it for a spin and waited for the light to come on, I got the same readings, so I bought a new switch off eBay for $11
