Decided finally to take the old steering box apart, expecting to find some obvious damage....

Why is that never the case!

The only visible damage I can find so far is a small flat where I have highlighted in the picture below:

I was sure it would be more serious with say a broken or defomed tooth but the rack and central spindle appear fine. I made a template of the teeth and checked to another one I have apart and they seem perfect:

I will try and get a better picture of the flat tommorow in daylight and remove the rack section aswell.

Was really hoping to find something obvious!

    Pete,

To be honest it looks pretty good considering the tracks and tyres etc you have put it up against
BUT, that flat on the worm IS enough to cause a problem, think of the force exerted against that surface while tuning a complete steering assembly with the weight of the vehicle included...let alone 35" tyres

More importantly - has the box arrived yet???
    $770 is a good price.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

    Hi Justin,

Yep the box arrived and was fitted about a week after the issue appeared (start of April) Got it from All4x4 in Kotara. We were heading to the high country and I wasnt happy with it with the jump!

New one is surviving so far! I will be hydro assisting it I think though as the weight and effort to turn the steering in rocks is ridiculous.

Will drill and tap the original box when I get time and sort out a ram etc.

    Rgds
    Pete
