    Nissan oil filter for 3.9?

    Hi,

    Stupid question but...

    I have a few genuine Nissan oil filters for the TD42 in the garage, they cross reference to the Ryco Z9. Will they be sweet to use on the 3.9?

    No probs so long as you have the clearance to fit the long filter. There are a number of filters that are compatible, volvo 4 cylinder is one.

    On a 3.9 with V belts you should use a short Z9 eg z89A, as the axle can hit the Z9 length filter on full compression. This is because there is an oil cooler insert on the filter base.

    I think this also applies to serpentine as the oil pump was still in the same place.

    Yes, assuming you are talking of a 3.9 V8 and not an Isuzu 3.9 :'

    I used Z9 filters on my '86 classic V8 with never a problem about hitting when off road.

    I used Z9 filters on my '86 classic V8 with never a problem about hitting when off road.
    Er, the correct filter for a 3.5 is a Z9 as it doesn't have the cooler sandwich that the 3.9 has.
    Many people MAY not hit them off road but LR did change the spec for a reason and many people have hit them off road with drastic results.

    I joked to one of my customers that when I fitted a genuine Landrover ERR3340 filter to their 240 Volvo, I had doubled the value of the car...luckily they saw the funny side. Some Volvo owners aren't like that

    Provided the oil filter that you wish to use has a built in bypass valve, then no problem. The reason that this is important is that the oil pump on the 3.9, in fact in all Rover V8 engines from circa 1977 onwards, does not have an inbuilt bypass valve. (This is not to be confused with the pressure relief valve).

    Look into the centre chamber of the filter and typically you will see a coil spring at the base. This identifies that filter as having an inbuilt bypass valve.
