    Fuel Chip

Hi, does anybody know if these work or are they just snake oil?
    Thanks.

    Stefan

The modification is designed to directly compete with the more expensive performance remapping systems, power programmers and upgrade chips, but at a significantly reduced cost. You can expect to pay anything from $500-$900 for a full ECU remap service. This practically does the same thing at a fraction of the cost and for a similar power gain. Our '+15BHP' Power Modules are plugged in between one of your car's sensors and the ECU. This is also known as a 'piggy back' device as it is external to the main processing unit. Fitting instructions are included on the reverse of the card and no special tools are needed for installation you simply plug the module in. Usually takes between 5-10 minutes to install at the most.

    How does it work?

It will modify any standard ECU by telling the ECU that the incoming air in the intake system is cold and so advances the ignition by up to 2 degrees with more fuelling to compensate, therefore producing more power with more torque at lower revs. In many cases fuel economy is increased too. Power is increased by up to 15BHP and torque is increased significantly.
It will be more responsive and you WILL LIKE IT

Not suitable for a D1, probably illegal on post 2003 cars too.

You do realise its just a $0.05 resistor available from jaycar etc..

    Snake oil.

These things are really a performance modification NOT an economy one. I challenge anybody to prove they get better economy using one.

I've used one that is specifically sold to be 'economical' compared to the usual 'hi power' chips on the wifes Astra, and even though I could 'short shift' and miss the odd gear, it was never better than the standard setting.

I have figures on distance and fuel to back up this claim - the 'on board' computer did say I was getting nearly 20% better fuel consumption though, so I'm guessing most claims of reduced usage are by people who only use the trip computer.

Oh, another issue with the 'box of lies' on the Astra was the propensity for it to break traction in the wet - in 3rd gear! Lots more torque, lots more power (much to the embarassment of one XR6 owner) and fractionally smoother. Removed from the car as the wife didn't like or need the extra grunt. After 9mths of ownership, she is still complaining that when she accelerates in 2nd or 3rd she catches the car in front too easily!

    I should have said I have a Dec 1994 3.9 injection running
    gas/petrol.

Just run 10-12 degrees BTDC timing and use premium petrol, that's as sophisticated as you need for a D1

A 1994 3.9 injection does not have an air temp sensors I do not know what you would intercept. In fact all or nearly all MAF equipped cars do not have one as the MAF measures AIR MASS which takes into account temperature.
Only MAP cars have air temp sensors, or old flappers.

Also 1994 Discos do not have computer controlled advance , just a vacuum diaphragm and some weights.

The power chips are absolutely brilliant on a diesel motor. People I know have done over 100,000 km on them with them installed with no detriment to the motor. Personally I fitted a DTUK chip to my TD5 about 10,000 km ago. It difference in acceleration, acceleration over taking and holding speed/accelerating on steep hills is amazing. Get one!!!
