Don't panic,for a new engine it's a very good choice. Pat
Hi,
I have a 93 Disco with a 200 Tdi engine. The engine had a complete rebuild a couple of years ago and it runs and starts very well.
I change the oil and filter very 10,000k's and use synthetic oil. I have been using 5w 40 and have been advised I should be using 15w 40.
Is this correct and if so what would the consequences of me using the "wrong" oil potentially be ?

You will be fine with the 5w/40 oil, especially now that winter in coming.Basically it just means that the oil you have used will flow easier when cold.If you were living up north or going to do a desert trip or a lot of extended heavy 4wd work, then you might think of a higher grade of oil.But no problem with what you have used, especially if you used a BRAND name of oil.
Echoing the thoughts of LowRanger, there was thread on oil viscosity etc for the Tdi's a little while ago, and there was general agreement that 5W/40 fully synthetic (I use Havoline myself) is a good choice, especially 'down south'.
Martin, did the person that suggested you were using the 'wrong' oil say why it was wrong ?
So many people, often mechanics just don't get the viscosity ranges, it's frightening. Keep your using your current oil with confidence, whoever told you it's 'wrong' because it's a 5W-40 has displayed their lack of knowledge on the subject.
I was advised by the local el cheapo carparts Autobarn warehouse guy. He checked the oil "bible" put out by the manufacturer. He was pretty certain he was the expert and knew everything. Always a bit of a worry.
My money is on the Landie experts on here.
Thanks everyone. Feeling much happier now,
Regards
Martin
I use penrite and change at around 5,000 klms, used to change as per 10,00 handbook, but noticed engine runs smoother and quieter, so I stay at around 5,000
