    Question Ungodly rattle

    Hi there,
I've just got home from a drive and have an ungogodly rattle from somewhere under the bonnet. I have a 2001 TD5 with 196000kms. It first sounded like a loose baffle in the muffler, but i got under the car and couldn't be sure. It only happens when it's on idle. If I raise the revs to 1000 it disapears. Under the bonnet I can't tell where it is coming from.
Has anyone else had a similar noise and can suggest what it may be. I have searched the site and haven't found anything similar.

    Heat shield on the turbo?

Does it sound tinny or is it a knocking noise?

It sounded tinny like the baffle in the muffler. I think it came from the Gearbox as the car no longer moves either in drive or reverse.

    Thumbs up Problem solved

    Hi all,
thanks for your help. It turned out to be the flex plate. Luckily, I found a significant oil leak whileI was under there so I guess I'll fix that too.

How have you (or are you going to) fix a flex plate? I only have manuals so not sure what they are or what they do.
    Tks

    David, repaired by replacement.

The flex plate is what the torque convertor bolts to on the perimeter. The centre of the flex plate is then bolted to the crankshaft.

Basically it is what joins the crank (engine) to the torque convertor (trans).
