    sump leak

I Have a 1998 V8 discovery which has a small oil leak which shows up at the bottom of the flywheel housing ,my grandson mechanic says it is the rear main oil seal but i disagree ,I am sure it is the sump gasket I won't bore you with the details how i figured this out .Now the problem , is there a gasket there or not ?? there seems to be conflicting information ,some say gasket, some say gasket goo ,I do not see any sign of a gasket ,there seems to be sumps with 16 bolts or 17 bolts!!! some say the gasket supplied by Landrover will not fit ,soooo what is the story here ,I would prefer a rubber gasket not those hopeless cork things ,what do you reckon ........cheers Maroochy

Rear main leaks are rare on the V8s so I'd agree that it seems to be the sump.

What you use to seal it though is up to you. LR didn't use a gasket, just sealant. Most workshops seem to do the same.

If you use sealant, don't use too much or the excess can eventually fall inside the sump & clog the oil pick up.

RTV. I had good success with the Permatex Sensor safe Grey.
    Black didn't cut it.

LR use a sealant Part Number STC50550. It is loctite 5900. I have only seen 5900 in a chalking gun tube, where the LR stuff is in a single use tube. It must be very clean and all paint removed from sump area where sealant goes.

Thanks for the reply's you blokes ,always handy to know parts supply such as roverparts ,will keep that in mind .Anyway changed the sump gasket, actually there was no sump gasket there only some sort of silicone sealant .So far no sign of leakage ,but it's early days yet .....cheers Maroochy

    Maroochy,
How has the sump gasket been?

I am trying to sort out a few leaks myself. I think (hope) that it's the sump gasket but I'm not convinced that it's not the rear main seal.
I'm getting oil on the back of the sump not on the bell housing.

Out of interest how did you come to the conclusion that it was the sump gasket?

    Ryan
