    Mantec v Safari Snorkel

I am looking at getting a snorkel for my D2a V8 and was wondering how the Mantec compares to the Safari?

Obviously the less changes of direction the better the airflow, while I have read the Mantec is very good item I can't find any pictures anywhere to show how it looks under the bonnet to compare if it is less or more restrictive then the Safari.

Has anyone had experience with the Mantec snorkel on a Discovery? I have a Safari on my D1 which works fine but the Mantec on the D2 almost hides up in the corner of the guard and is far less intrusive looking.

Any advice and or shared experiences would be appreciated.

    cheers,
    Terry

I would love a Mantec snorkel on mine, less chunky and it is a very subtle item. But unfortunately they are pretty expensive. I don't really think there is a real difference between snorkels, all it is a pipe that extends the air intake really. For me I would go Mantec simply because it looks awesome.

I agree Hendrik the Mantec does look good.

Really I'm trying to figure out is if it works as well or better then a Safari one does.

Does anyone have any experience with Mantec snorkels on D2's?

If possible I'd really like to see how they look fitted under the bonnet of a D2 if anyone has any pictures?

    cheers,
    Terry

I have no direct experience with either for a D2 , but looking at the applicable websites it appears both the V8 and Td5 share the same snorkels for either brand.

Safari snorkel: Safari Snorkel System - SS395HF
    Safari fitting: Safari - Snorkels

Mantec snorkel (no useful pics): Mantec | Quality Land Rover Accessories

This is the excellent site of one of our UK members, Urban Panzer: www.discovery2.co.uk /Raised Air Intake (snorkel)
He details the fitting of a Mantec snorkel to his Td5 with heaps of pics.
Since the V8 and Td5 share the same snorkel, I would expect the V8 to appear the same as in his pics.

From the pics, both brands appear to deliver air pretty much the same way.
I would doubt either one to be superior in performance to the other.

Again I have no direct experience with either for a D2, just an opinion.

Rovacraft list Mantec snorkels in their Britpart catalogue.
Don't know if they actually have any though.

I chose Mantec because the vertical part of the intake runs behind the front panel and I think it looks better. Its also steel & less to break! One thing I did notice (not having had a snorkel before) was opening the passenger window you can really hear the roar of the air being sucked in

Over on the Defender2 forum I remember one guy commenting on how much better his Defender went after he removed his Mantec snorkel. This was done when he was changing parts over to a new vehicle I think. Whilst I like the look of the Mantec better than Safari, I think the ram air effect of the Safari has to help the engine breathe better.

The problem for the mantec as i see it is where you have hardware running on the inside of that guard - in my case LPG converter and vapour hose and in the case of others a small optima battery or the like...SCRATCH that I just saw the fitment on Urban Pazer's site...nice!

    Cheers
