Do you want chips with your TD5

The perennial question ... to chip or not to chip. I had a search and couldn't find any consensus of opinion re any subsequent issues, hence my little questionaire.

    I've chipped all my LRs

Prior to chipping the Defender it did the manifold twice.
After chipping, it did it twice.

The discovery did the manifold once before chipping at 30k and once after at 90k... Since ceramic coating and stress relieving it hasnt done it again.
Now at 130k and towing heavy often 2300kg so she's getting a workout.

    Bah can only vote once....

Disco 2002 has been great... no issues.. tombie chip... but i think im at that point where a sensor has **** itself... economy has plummeted... need to talk to landy andy about it as he had similar... and need time to diagnose it.

Defender 2002 has recently been chipped (tombie again i think his mild chip @ 140kw) will be going further once funds allow. tows very well. Just done 550k trip with boat (1.5t and 3.5m high like towing a brick wall) and deefer full of camping gear (we dont travel light) pulled up good hills at 100 with relative ease in 5th, supped a bit of fuel but not sure how much yet as i normally fill at 1000k's but i suspect i'll need to fill at about 700-800ks this time so about 13-14l / 100ks. i wasnt going easy on it either.... i guess wind resistance has a lot to play in that.

Monitored coolant temps on the way.. top of big hills we hit just 0.1 - 0.2 over 100deg generally ran at about 90 along the flat tho... down to about 87 down hills....

Another happy repeat tombie customer... cant say enough good stuff about him

    Ive got an autologic upgrade.
    D2 now drives very well.
Need to watch temp on long hills whilst towing.Intend upgrading the intercooler and renewing cooling system components.

    D2

    ECU upgrade and intercooler upgrade

    Warped a few manifolds
Snapped manifold studs with the warped manifolds

Undetermined at the moment on the head gasket, has signs but seems ok.

Auto transmission. In out in out in out in out. GET AN UPGRADED COOLER IF YOU"RE PUNCHING OUT BIG POWER!!!!! If you are not cooling your ATF properly, then you will smoke the Auto. Also, the ATF cooler in its standard position will get blocked with mud if you offroad it and you cant clean it unless you pull the radiators out. I would recommend an additional high presure ATF cooler remounted somewhere that you can clean it and it will get clean cool air.

Andy, is that EGT or coolant? I've seen my gauge move once while pulling a trailer with load up a long enough steep hill (Kurajong on Bells line of Rd out of Sydney) on a 46 degree day.

Like Tombie I have had manifold problems before and after chipping, I'm fairly happy with mine, although I have a Bruce Davis chip and the problem with his chip is you lose the soft throttle in low range and it surges suddenly without warning, very scarey if your trying to crawl down a steep incline

At the moment I have purchased a later ECU from a later model D2a and Tombie is working on a chip for it, hopefully it will help with the towing of my camper.

I have tried the medium Defender TD5 chip in the new ECU from Tombie2 and it was miles better than the B Davis chip, although I don't think it works as well in my manual Disco as it does in the Defender, the Defender seems to have a bit more poke when comparing mine against a Fender, I also lose the cruise and temp gauge with the Defender chip, the Def and Disco TD5s are a different setup and this is probably why.

I have sorted my manifold problems thanks to Tombie2, I have bigger manifold studs and have ground the webbing out on the manifold, so far 2yrs without a problem.

    Baz.
    Cheers Baz.

    Coolant Slunnie.
Its the Nanocom reading, gauge doesnt move.Easy enough to get 100degc in 5th towing.Seems 5teve is also saying the same about his Defer.
Did a Tombie map instal for Aaron40(autoD2) It got hotter as I adjusted the wastgate on my test hill.Got the tuning spot on in the end as he can JUST overboost it in cold air situations.
