    TD5 Manual Gear Box Noise

Hi there all its been happening for a while but its gotten to the point where its just annoying. I have a D2 Td5 5 speed manual. In 2nd, 3rd,4th there is a vibration noise like something very tiny is rubbing with in the box itself, but light noise. It occures between 2100rpm through to 4000rpm. It will even make this noise when stationary. I put the transfer case in neutral and the box into gear and it still made that noise so its not load related. In that range of RPM when slowing down it doesn't make the noise though. Last year most the bearings were replaced the clutch was replaced, as was the thrust bearing, Has anyone else had this? I'm going to try an oil addetive and see what changes, i have changed oils when they are due, and it has had a change since while this noise was happening and there wasd no bits of metal. I have been using a Nulon oil 75w 90 gear box oil what Nulon recommends for this car, Has any one got any ideas?

First thing I'd look for is two small metal objects rubbing together that have nothing to do with the gearbox. If I leave screws or small bolts on the middle tray above the g/box and they come together I am always surprised at quite how loud they sound for such a tiny contact. Perhaps under the gearlever boot or something? In the box between the seats?

    TD5 Gearbox Rattle

    Hi RedTD5,

I suggest you have a close look at the engine mounts, there appears to a run of them that compress with age and allows vibrations through the drive train. There is a measurement (40mm?) for what the depth of the hole on the top of the engine mount should be. There may be more info on this if you search this forum.

    Regards,

    Toad.

Ok. well i checked all my mounts all seem ok, i have put new oil in and i also put in an addetive. the noise was quietened for a bit but after a hard sorta day off road. its back to how it was. so i started looking into it again. I have found with the revs i spoke about before it willk also make it whenb the gear box is in neutral, has anyone had this?

When you are in neutral does it still make the noise with the clutch in and if so, will it do it stationary with a gear selected?

If that is the case the noise is not coming from the gearbox.
