Headlamps - To HID or not to HID?

    Hi All,

I am preparing the Discoverange for the road and am thinking about headlamps.

I want to go HID but am loathe to as I am sick of getting blinded by other cars with HID's fitted to standard headlamp units.

Has anyone fitted 7" units with a projector lense such as

I'm also interested in these globes with a halogen low and HID high

    Has anyone used these?

    Cheers,

    Robbie

If it needs some sort of inspection before you get it on the road, don't install HID low beam lights. It will fail the inspection if they check the light operation.

    HID & RWC

Yeah, thanks. I've dealt with the VICROADS Nazi's already.

    Cheers,

    I've got them fitted.

I haven't tried aligning them yet.

Because you have a standard low beam there should be no problems around the city at least in NSW,

Dont know the "projector" lens does any good?

The projector lenses in the low beams of my BMW E36 had a much more defined cutoff than normal lights and also a more even distribution.

I think that those are the main advantages and on correctly aimed HIDs would help reduce any dazzle to oncoming drivers.

AFAIK HIDs are only allowed in OZ even for OEM when the car has a headlight levelling device.
I wonder if my RRC with Hydromat qualifies.

Philip, I think it should, so long as it also has headlight washers (my 87 RRC does).

    Nah, I was only joking.
I think it is illegal to retrofit to any car.
BUT I guess the question is would the authorities notice or just think its another Blacktown boy with blue bulbs.

I don't think it is illegal, but would require engineering approval - which would not be forthcoming unless it met the requirements, including washers and either levelling headlights or suspension.

AND, looking at the ADRs, projector lenses for low beam.

Which raises yet another question. Do the 7 inch round projectors have enough room behind for a HID bulb?

Looks like I will have to be satisfied with my $50 35W units I have put in the spoiler spots ( and maybe I should add a HID conversion to a couple of Oscars that I have under the house )

Sorry but there are a lot and have been lots of comments on HID's being "illegal" yet when I read the reg's there is no requirement to have leveling devices washers associted specificly with having HID's. Infact HID's aren't specificly dealt with

Can someone point to the regualtion
