When did they change from circlips to rollpins?
The passion, but it's getting a little out of control, don't know how much longer I can keep this up! Am driving a lot softer nodays, went for a test run off road with the the new overdrive, still scared!!
When did they change from circlips to rollpins?
Not really a whole lot of progression when you look at the Leyland Brothers film where they crossed Australia from West to East in 1966 and they had the same failure.
The shafts used to rotate and wear away the circlips until the shaft fell out. I suppose they changed to roll pins to stop that.
Why not a big bolt like some others (Toyota?) fit to hold the shaft????
Like steering boxes this has been a LR problem since time began.

I think you will find that some of the early Series diffs had roll pins
does this problem go away when ARB airlockers are fitted ?
seems like a good excuse to me if it does.
"preventative maintenance is fitting airlockers honey. it will stop us breaking down in our time of need"
I believe so as it gets rid of the factory hemisphere eliminating all the roll pis and gears etc. You go to the ARB gears which I would imagine are a lot stronger. At least that's my reasons for doing it.

Diffs and headlight relays are among the 1st things I fix whenever (not very often) I get a new (to me) Land Rover.
I think Land Rover may have finally addressed the 2 pinion diff weakness when they changed to the P38 style diff, but as usual they had to introduce a new weakness in doing so.
