my D2 has done 161 000'ks all on road and only towed a single horse float for 6 months... its now on 168 000'ks and has been off road 3 times.
last weekend saw the rear diff drop dead from offroad frightand left it stranded on a mates farm 4 hrs from sydney. next day saw us installing a complete diff from bundalene. on the way home the front end started to tick like a rock stuck in the tyre...but it went away when i backed off.....
this is another case of a 20c part causing hundereds of dollars damage.
the rollpins that hold the cross shaft in the hemisphere shear and allow the cross pin to drop onto the rotating pinion gears head. this allows the opposit end of the pin to drop out of its hole and cause all sorts of issues with the sun gears... eventually the pin snaps the gears break and vola! no drive...

all that carnage and still on the 255 55 R18 road tyres![]()

Er, this usually happens from excessive wheelspin across the axle when the lubricant from the pin/planetaries is thrown out and the pin turns.
So operation has a part in it.
I am not criticising , just offering a recommendation that this damage can be minimized by avoiding cross axle wheelspin.

Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......
EXACTLY the same as what mine did Phil, right down to the same cracks in the gears and the same parts of the gear that broke. The hole for the cross pin on mine was oval though. The rear pinion on mine is quite pummeled from the cross pin.

the older rover diffs have the cross pin held in with a circlip at both ends, this allows the cross pin to rotate, as the newer diffs have this rollpin arrangement this dosnt allow for and rotation of the cross pin, hense the rollpin breaking and ending up in what you see.
the crosspin shafts show no signs of pickup from excessive wheel spin or lack of lube.
i know of the excessive wheel spin you speak of but that is not my styleand the D2 has traction controll.

Well, my front diff did the same thing! On the same day the starter motor burnt out! And that was only a couple of 100rd ks before the left hand mainfold fell to bits, I just rebuilt the gearbox, now the water pump is leaking, but the brakes are fine after I replaced them. I worry about it to somtimes, but then, what other things would I do in my spare time?!I used to have a boat, but it cost to much...hmm.
