    Panel beating aluminium

    Hi All

I have an "impression" in the front corner of the 130 tub. I can not access behind it to beat it out. It's really too big to bog as is it.

Can I drill a hole in the centre of impression and try to "pull" it out? Should I heat the aluminium first to make it more workable?

    Cheers

Unless you know what you are doing, heating aluminium can be disastrous, aluminium doesn't glow red like steel and once it has reached melting point you will know as it will just fall away and you will have one hell of a big hole, I would use a slide hammer with a self tapper screwed into the dent to gently pull the dent to reduce the amount of bog needed, good luck, Regards Frank.

It needs to be heated to take the work hardening out of the metal. Then worked a bit and reheated. As Frank said the heating point and melting point as very close and disaster can result. Apparently if you coat the bare metal with cooking oil the heating point is where the cooking oil starts to bubble.

Do you have a photo of the area to be repaired? Is there any access at all behind?

Annealing is probably not necessary. A slide hammer will pull it out but you really need access to get a dolly up behind so that you can smooth it up prior to bog. (Depending on the shape of the panel)

    Thanks for the replies...

I have used dishwashing liquid as a heating indicator previously on aluminium....that was on 3mm thick plate.

The dent is on the front passenger corner of the tub. Looks like the previous owner has brushed against a post. There is no access for a dolly behind the panel.

I have a similar dent beside the headlight. I can access that one by removing the headlight.

I will get myself a dent puller kit. Looks like they are ony $20 from supercrap.

The hardest part will be matching the paint.

    Cheers
