Quick test: start the engine, how long before the fan clutch decouples and freewheels? Can take 30 seconds of revs to decouple a good clutch fan... Stationary stiffness is not as good a test unless you can spin it cold and it doesn't stop straight away. Then its probably stuffed.

    While you're down there.

Check for cracks in the root of the blades of the fan for cracks.
Not sure if Disco's are in the same boat, but Rangie's are famous for fan blades letting go.
At best it will only dent your bonnet when it lets go. At worst, Radiator...

You should be able to <technically> stop the fan from rotating with your hand when cold.......
Although I wouldn't poke MY little fingers in there if you get my drift.

A stuck viscous is no big issue: drive like that until you can find a replacement. What's an extra 5kW off the engine between mates?

if its locked solid it'll launch the blades into the rad... the fans get the same problem as the rangies

Runs perfect temp around town (just under half), went for a highway run at 100ish kph, temp sat at half. Hit some hills ( Mt.Crosby rd for locals) & pop goes the weasel, which makes me think the fan isn't locking up when hot.

O.K. I just pulled the fan hub off & it has light to moderate tension when cold, heated the viscous hub & it seemed easier to turn than when cold. I do believe tis unit is fuggered!!
