Running madman ems probe, quite long, gets right into manifold.

Saying it CAN hit that temp easily, with NO smoke out exhaust, (well, none visible from mirrors ). When you reach the point on hills/acceleration where more throttle just spits fuel/smoke out the exhaust the temps will go sky high, but obviously anyone with a hint of IQ or mechanical nous will realise that backing off a fraction will drop egts massively, without the vehicle even dropping off speed.

I only hit those temps "for fun" - I had just installed the boost gauge and ems, so was watching the relationship between throttle/boost/egts. Find the limits then back it off accordingly.

"Camo Tractor" drives really well, keeps up with traffic with no dramas, and since new injectors etc it doesnt drop off speed on most hills either. If I was on standard 29" tyres instead of fat heavy 33's the car would be a rocket!

I have "silly-con" hoses, and after seeing standard intercooler hoses split/delaminate I wouldnt say they were a con at all, especially $100au landed I thought it was a safe and good idea since my car has hit 250,000kms with an unknown/uncomplete service history.

Certainly I am not after a race car, i call it a tractor for a reason, and more than anything I value reliabilty after the thing breaking down twice on my 6000km simpson trip. (WHY WHY get a landrover then??? hahaha) 99% of the time I drive it like a grandpa anyways.

All I want in a car is to be able drive fully loaded on 33's towing my bikes/camper trailer on a hot day on the freeway at 100kmh, without dropping speed at the mere sniff of a hill. Maybe even with the a/c on. My car is pretty much at that point now, but more power with same/lower egts wont have to push car as hard, and will use same or less fuel doing it.

I've got the popular drop in replacement that is around $550 from the usual places, British 4wd, Roverparts+ etc. Mine is auto too, so I figured that was the easiest option. Haven't really used my Disco all that much lately to test it out and I haven't fitted my EGT gauge either, yet.

I'm not after a race car either, but I would like in the region of the same power to weight ratio as a 1HD-T GXL spec 80 Series. In terms of a 300Tdi, that'd be 108 kW and 320 Nm. That's the stock output of a 300Tdi + ~20%

Joel, at guess the Defender is a touch gruntier/faster/better acceleration than our TD42T Patrol, although the type of load/hill can vary the outcome.

No, it's definitely faster than the Patrol with the same load and the 'fender has 33" tyres.

But add a little extra boost and fuelling to the TD42, with a 3" exhaust and it'll chomp widdle tdi's for brekky, lunch and dinner

I would have to agre Steve. I would not like to think my engine had produced EGT's of over 700 degrees. I'd be getting rid of it if it had.

    Sssshhhh, you're spoiling the story

and it doesn't take much extra boost and fuel, most of the gains come from a true 3" dump off the turbo and full 3" system.
    God they're strangled stock.

Apart from the Series I GU's running hot, never heard of bad clutches or Mitsu TD05's having problems, and if they do it's a far lower % than 300Tdi probs I'd reckon.

Our TD42T has done well in excess of 320,000km on the original clutch, and it spent most of it's life either hauling crap around the farm or towing horses to Sydney and back.
It's only the last couple of years (since leaving the land and then EI) it's had an easier life.
