    TD5 piston different??

    Hello,

Because of a crack in one of my TD5 pistons i bought a new one to fit.

Now i just found that the piston is slightly different. The dimension are the same and the weight is the same but the "hole"in the middel is off centre in the new one.

Are there different TD5 pistons available? What about fitting another type?

I'm not definate, but the later ones may be. The injection is different, so the piston may be different to suit.
    Cheers

    Earth to JC.......

Pretty sure D2a was different as blknight has said,MY03 onwards.I vaguely remember torgue rating was up slightly also for these later TD5's,but was hardly noticeable.

Don't know if they are interchangeable.....

By hole in the middle I assume you are referring to the combustion chamber bowl.

With direct injection diesel engines like the TD5, the designers have to position the injector where they can best fit it - one of the big advantages of modern diesel engines is the use of 4 valves per cylinder, which allows the injector to be placed in the centre.

Then the designer has to position the combustion chamber bowl in the piston and position the nozzles in the injector so that the injector can spray the fuel correctly into it.

Then the designer has to design the inlet tract to get the necessary swirl to work with the all of above.

If you fit a piston with the combustion chamber in the wrong place for the injector (or fit a wrong injector or nozzle) that cylinder will not burn fuel correctly. It can lead to piston failure and the imbalance between cylinders could give vibrations and lead to crankshaft failure.
