    Bilstein rebuilding - yet again!

    Hi Gurus,

Been very happy with the Bilsteins on our '97 300Tdi Discovery - but having been on there since 2002 and now having covered almost 200,000 km, they are probably due for a bit of TLC (or even replacement - Shock!, Horror!)

I've searched some previous threads on having Bilis rebuilt but they're all a bit old now. So, resident gurus on matters damping: (a) are our 200K km old Bilis likely to be suitable for rebuilding or should we just retire them gracefully (to the tip!) and get something new; or (b) if they might be rebuildable, who are the recommended mobs to do this rebuilding? We're in SE Qld and could probably do without the Disco for a week or two while the dampers were sent away and returned.

Or (c) if we really should get new ones, where is the best place to get new Bilis? Or something else that works well on Discoverys, lasts almost forever and doesn't cost the earth?

I know JC likes de Carbon and I'll probably see what a set of them are worth these days. Rick130, if you still frequent these parts, I'd much appreciate your opinion. (I haven't been around here for a while myself, so I'm not up on recent activity on AULRO).

Thanks in advance for your advice, Ladies and Gentlemen.

    Google is your friend.
Bilstein shock absorbers - Sydney Shock Absorbers is the Australian distributor of Bilstein shocks

I would think that they would be rebuildable as long as no dents and the shafts are unmarked. AFAIK, they will test the shocks before rebuild and give a quote.

I am going to have mine done before my next trip.
With the loyal duty yours have done why would you change?

    Regards Philip A

    G'day Ian,
been away from here for a while myself and only popped back in over the last week or so.

My preferred rebuilder of Billies are Baker Bros in Melbourne, can PM you the ph. # & address.
Gary Baker and his brother really know their stuff, but I haven't dealt with them for ten years so don't know if they are still in business.

Slunnie has had good success with Heasmans/Sydney Shocks but I've found their prices a little, err, pricey on the rebuild/re-gas side of things.

If they only need fluid, top seal, piston and floating piston bands and O rings it may be worthwhile to rebuild but if there is any wear on any metal parts at all it would be cheaper to replace.

Gary Baker, 37 Corinish Rd Huntingdale or Oakleigh South, depending on your directory. Ph # 03 9544 6066

IMO still the best Bilstein tuner in the country. Before the V8's brought damper development inhouse, most everyone used Gary for thier shock development.

Gary also knows off road very well, he and his brother dominated the off road racing scene here from its inception right through the seventies.

Ian, if the car isn't jumping when you hit a set of washboards or bouncing around, they may not have gone off much at all, so might still be OK, but you'd only know for sure if you plonked them on a dyno.

The cheapest source is usually eshock in the US, last time I looked they were something like US$117.50 each for 6100 series dampers.
