Smile Range rover classic wheelbase & towing

    Hi,
just joined. Thanks for having me

    1. I am trying to find the tow capacity of the range rover classic 1982.
    2. More importantly, I am looking for the wheelbase dimensions.
    3. Also kerb weight if anyone knows.

If anyone knows these, can they please let me know.

I am almost finished my engine upgrade (the rest of the car already upgraded - had a 308 Holden in it but since it died, gone the ls1) and I need to tow a very long and heavy enclosed car carrier trailer but now having second thoughts on the towing due to wheelbase.

Will still keep my rangie as I love it but I might need a different tow vehicle depending upon answers.

    Mostly worried about Jack knifing.

    Thanks.

    RRC has 100inch wheelbase.
Official kerb weight is 1970 KG or thereabouts for a 4 door.

    3500Kg and 250Kg download .
    Product details
Google is your friend. ( approx 30 seconds)

Philip A is spot on with weights and dimensions. I would recommend a HD tow bar.
They are quite stable as have a short overhang compared to others. It really depends if its lifted and how the suspension is set up.
I have no dramas towing 3 ton braked with mine

    Thanks guys.
Lol phil, I did google but I am a novice and couldn't seem to find the info. I think my search term was wrong.

I was told the old rangie had a 4000 kg towing braked limit.

The suspension on rangie is raised substantially (bot over the top tho)but I had a mate look at it for me a long time ago ( he modifies them and also makes award winning off road buggies and is a champion of a few comps) and hr said it's all been done right.

He did recommend putting air bags for the rear to keep it up abd better steering but he also put the fear of god in me with regards to short wheel base and Jack knifing

the main reason he said that is due to the length if the trailer.

    I don't want another car/truck though.

    .
It does but the towbar doesn't. And the authorities go by the towbar.

I thought with the old disco and the defenders the limit was 4t but had to be with a pintle hook? 3.5 on the ball they reduce th noseweight to 150kg tho..

    The D2 is 3.5 & 250kg... well mine is

Im assuming the rangie would be the same as the defender / d1?

I always found that a pollution low compression Rover V8 from a Range Rover of that era were horrible for towing.
I towed a 2 ton caravan half way around Australia and found that 70 k/mh was as good as it got on hills or with a head wind.
If it has an LT95 put stage 1 1.336:1 high ratio in it works much better.
What they are rated at and what they can practically tow are 2 different things.

I am looking at changing from a D2 to RRC due to the RRC unchanged nose weight from 250.

I found that the 250 in the D2 is only if you have 2 poeple in the car and no lugage, (rear spring model).

the RRC (1987) is 250 regardless of weight in car as long as not over GVM
