    LT230, High range gear swap

gday, in my S1 disco, i currently have a 1.003:1 high range LT230 transfer case, on the bench is my old 1.2:1 LT230, into which i would like to swap in some 1.4:1 gears i have bought off a fellow aulro member

there is nothing wrong with the 1.2:1 case, it just stayed attached to the auto box when i converted to manual, so currently it is lazy and terrible to drive on the freeway, around town, and pretty much anywhere considering i am driving on larger diameter tyres (235/85)

this is why i have sourced the 1.4:1 gears, to bring my gearing back to normal, or as close as i can get

has anyone done a similar swap? and are there any tips or tricks i should know about?

obviously i plan on changing the ratios, then swapping transfer cases, i would like to do this whole thing as simply as possible, im not after an overhaul of my transfer case, just to put the gears in and be back on the road

    any advice?

Since your going to have some of it striped down, you may as well re-race it,shim up the center diff fit new o rings and seals. Be good as new then.

This possibility may be of interest.
For my purposes with 300Tdi 130 Defender used mainly on rural roads in flat country, would prefer 1.2 high to standard 1.4. A while ago, bought an LT230 that came out of a Discovery. Turned out it was 1.003 type originally from an early Rangie.

Reckon first and reverse would be too fast in high. Also, would be handy at times if they were slower in low. Anyway, came up with a slightly cheaper solution than Maxidrive type low. Had a new input gear cut for the 1.003 box. Instead of standard 26 tooth to 41 on the middle gear of the cluster, it is 22 teeth driving the 44 tooth high range gear. Overall result 1.27:1 high and 4.21:1 low compared with standard 1.41 and 3.32.

I still have to get around to properly assembling this box and installing it.
