200tdi - white smoke when cold

OK - first cold morning with my 200tdi (about 0*C ).
Little bit hard to start which I expected as the battery isn't perfect, but once it was idling it continued to blow a reasonable amount of white smoke. Just white smoke - not blue or black - and smells like unburnt diesel. Also ran a bit rough at idle so to me seems like one cylinder isn't igniting.

Held it just above idle for a few minutes to see if it sorted itself out, but still had the white smoke - and a decent cloud if it revved it a bit.

Took it for a drive down the road, and within a couple of minutes the engine temp had come up to normal and the smoke was gone.

I'm planning on doing a resistance check on the glow plugs to see if any are dodgy. Anything else I should check?

thats normal, its cold and the injectors are probabley due for replacement.

its just unburnt fuel I deal with it by starting it, giving it 10-20 seconds to get oil pressure up and then setting high idle or start driving it, nothing warms a diesel up like a load.

Thanks Dave - nice to know its normal.
Out of interest, is it normally just one cylinder, or is it possible to get some unburnt fuel from each cylinder after ignition when its cold?

    bit of both...

if you have a glow plug thats completely not playing and its cold theres no hot spot to start the combustion process, this shows up as a really harsh miss and often the engine will stall out at idle RPM settings. Fozzy has this issue with the #1 glow plug being short circut so out of the system. he wont idle without some hand throttle applied and runs rough till that cylinder "catches" and then he puffs white smoke at idle till the engine temperature registers OR I get some load on and make it work.

Thanks - that sounds pretty much what I had this morning.
I'll definitely check the glow plugs.

If the timing is on the retarded side it'll do that too. 0C isn't too cold for aDI diesel to start and run smoothly.

Just to continue with this, I pulled all the glow plugs out, and checked each one was working by hooking it up to my 10A battery charger.
Each worked, and glowed yellow after about 10 seconds.

The #1 plug was stuck in really tight with carbon. Is this normal, or would it indicate that the plug wasn't correctly seated?

I've seen new injectors and also injector nozzles on UK ebay. Is it just a matter of changing the nozzles on my existing ones to give them a new life, or not that simple?

When I took my 200Tdi to Bosch the bloke tested the injectors and all were more or less buggered after 300,000 km. He pulled them apart there and then, and whilst it is possible to rebuild, he advised replacement as it was just as cheap and the price he gave me was attractive.

Unfortunately they are a little dearer than 300Tdi ones.

Which Bosch place did you take it to, and what did the injectors cost you (PM if you prefer not to post here).
Just started phoning around, and first quote I got was $250 each.
