EFI (Hotwire) onto a 4.4 Leyland

    Hi,

Been busy building up a 4.4 to drop into my county, originally I had planned to use the original SU's but something happened and here I am with a Hotwire Injection system except now I don't know how to wire it all up....the more I read the worse the confusion becomes.
Tried searching the forums but again I have found nothing definitive.
    So my questions:
1: The loom I have includes wiring for two O2 sensors - are they required??
2: How do I conclusively ID the injection system eg. 13CU, 14CU or 14CUX - it did not include the ECU and I need to find the correct unit.
3: What sensor wires "Need" to be connected to make it work??
4: Will my scorcher dissy from the carbied vehicle need to be altered to allow the EFI to detect spark??

Thanks once again in advance of your enlightened answers.

Where did you buy it? USA?
What year is it supposed to be from?

1 No but they are desirable. You need a different tune resistor.
2 I can send you the US manual which will show the different looms, if there are any differences. Off the top of my head the 14CUX is the first to have an electronic speedo, and injector cutoff.
    3. MAF, TPS, temp, fuel temp, IAC, coil . Desirable VSS,O2, carbon canister valve
4 no, it's from the coil

Look at the posting in projects on fitting o2 sensors. There is a wiring diagram for 14CUX in the how to.
PM me your email address and I will email the Pdf of the manual

Wasn't this meant to be easy..:((

    Hi PhilipA,

No, all purchased in Australia from this site, from a 96/97 Disco - 14CUX yes??

Is there a cheap alternate O2 sensor that I can use??
Diagrams would be fantastic - I will PM my email address.

Thanks I will have a look at the02 post today.

Yes 14CUX , but the colour colour codes may be different on the wires than the wiring diagrams as they are older.

The best way to ID them is to look at the wire codes in the 40 pin plug and tag them. It will all then become clear. I am sure the pin positions did not change.

    Which o2 Sensors

Does anyone know if the expensive land rover 02 sensors can be substituted for a lower priced unit out of a different car.
I read somewhere the nissan ones may do the job but these cost more again.
I will keep my eye on global automotive in case they become available as suggested by PhilipA.

The thing is that they are Titania sensors not Zirconia like used on most cars and they cannot be substituted.
There are some sites in UK that sell them cheaper but not as cheap as Global used to. I think they bought a joblot. I wish I had bought spares.

    Look at this
Lambda sensors / exhaust oxygen sensors

    and this
Just Lambda, Landrover lambda sensors, Bosch and NTK zirconia and titania sensors by post
It looks like a 96 on Disco has a 4 wire sensor. you should be able to tell from the loom. If so AFAIR the extra wire is an earth but check on the Justlambda site as they have a lot of info there.

Hi Rokkitt. I have a hot wire injection system on a 4.4 in my county. The ignition pulses to the computer I am not so sure if it will or will not work. I have the Hotwire book infront of me and doesn't say anything about a sync pulse but working in the electronic industry I think that there would have to be??? I run the elcetronic dizzy I got with the injection system. Mine doesn't have the O2 sensors so I cannot help you with that. I have the 14cxu computer that has been chiped for a 4.6 and goes realy well. With the O2 sensors you may not have to rechip it but I know ones like mine run lean and will stuff you heads.

I believe it gets a signal from the coil, have a wiring diagram and just need to finish marking everything up, getting there...lol - I am not putting o2 sensors on it at this stage.
Your not the first person to mention fuelling being a problem with this injection system - does it run lean throughout the rev range?? is the chip upgrade essential?? I was hoping to get it going with the original ECU and then upgrade to a megasquirt once it's all back together - then I will look into the o2 sensors again.

Sounds interesting, but have you ever considered trying to get a delco computer running it? i was looking at this on my 4.4 and may do it in future. I had planned on running using a 3.9 efi manifold, a crank sensor on the dizzy and other sensors to suit holden efi v8 setup, i also have a mate who knows quite a bit about doing this(he runs a delco on his old 202 powered gemini drag car) he seems to think it will be straight forward to do and easy to find parts for. You would also loose the need for a MAF and gain the ability run what ever injectors/tune you want.

I still want to do this to my old motor, and put it in something else after i finish county build, but the plan for future will be to run the carby manifold setup something like the manifold in the following link, it may also run a few small turbos

Spent so long in the planning stage of this engine that I thought it would go together easy - how wrong I was..!!
Now I have the plan for the motor and EFI there is no way I will deviate - the megasquirt looks very attractive and it makes the 3.9EFI tuneable to whatever I want it to do; not so hard to set up either by the looks of things - just concerned that the motor will be useless with the standard ECU especially as I have a high torque cam in there.
The Holden setup would be great but I will stick to what I have for now or the wife really will kill me...can you imagine it - "but love it's only a few hundred dollars more"

    LMAO
