What makes you suspect it needs replacing?

You can check the backlash and pinion preload first by hand without removing it.
Then drain the oil and check for shiny bits.

If all these check out OK, unless it is making noise or clunking, then I would leave it alone.

a change of oil could help a lot if it is a little noisy

Hi, My front diff had worn the housings on either side of the spider gears, lots of backlash and filings in the oil. It,s a bit of a pain to have to strip it all down to get the diff out, so I would definitely have a good look at the oil and see what backlash you have with the prop disconnected.

speaking of front diffs, what the bloody hell is that snaily lookin thing near the pinion?????

Mine fell off. It doesn't really need it. Some sort of vibration damper thingy
