    delaminating hoses... a question

    Hi guys

Still trying to find out what is causing the disco td5 to be poor fuel wise. Being short of time im mulling a few things over.

Have done a quick maf test and see over 550 so MAF should be ok... seems sluggish tho.

Is it possible for the MAF reading to peak at 550+ but still have delaminated hoses? could explain the poor economy and sluggish performance? i havent got time to take them off yet..

i'd be guessing if delaminating there would be a lag between the air being pushed in and it partially blocking, so the MAF would read correctly?

    Any idea?

    Gday Steve,
No sure on what the readings should be for the MAF

But any form of air restiction on a deisel will cause incorrect air/fuel mixture and effect economy and power..especially if its the small 90 elbow hose at the turbo starting to collapse, when mine went it stopped the car..

Your viabration at idle isnt your engine mounts by chance, mine sounded terrible and seemed as tho it needed the idle revs bumped up, but it turned out to be the engine mounts...just a thought..

What readings is your MAF giving at idle?
    What are your IAP readings?

be very weary of MAF readings with the nanocom. 2 of the maf's ive got are dead but both show good readings via nanocom. it wasnt till i bought a 3rd brand new OE maf and installed it that i could tell the others were catcus.

the engine came back to life and the auto's gear changes were back to nice and crisp.
have a look in the good oil section for comments by myself and justinc on this topic.

i too am suffering from excessive fuel consumption, 500-600k's to a tank ive done the IC hoses, cleaned the IC changed every oil in the bloody thing, the only sensors left to be changed are now the speed transducer in the auto, the MAP and i want to do the boost modulator. oh and ive got a new injector harness coming.

just wish one of us could find the issue!

steve, is yours manual or auto, std tyres etc?

    cheers phil

Yeah thats what i was summising.. but as it still runs and is still smooth (dont know where you got the idle thing from, a cross post i guess?) i was guessing a balooning hose internally... just need some time!

    Hi Mike

Readings on the MAF which is original after being cleaned with MAF cleaner were around the low to mid 60's at idle up to about 300-400 at mid revs to over 550 at 3k and over. I only went on what Rach was telling me as she was reading the data live as i was driving.. seemed fairly reasonable figures.

    Hi Phil

I've been following your post... your not having a great deal of luck!

Mines Auto and slightly bigger tyres.. cant remember what size but i think its just one size up. Oh and its got tombies mild chip.. The boost modulator is an easy thing to change.. but i would of thought the nanocom would of showed the boost being flat if it was hosed?

The only thing i have done to mine is clean the maf and the MAP (the sensor on the inlet manifold?) the MAP was caked in carbon and oil due to im guessing the egr... which will be the next thing to go.. on the deefer and disco. I'd be guessing if the sensor is snotted up, then the inlet manifold is likely to be pretty rough too...

Have you checked your EGR to see if its stuck open or the modulator is playing up?

Is the new injector harness for a reason or just something to eliminate? Saying that i have a stock of 2 at home.. just in case as we now have 2 td5's in the family... along with the rocker gasket

One of us will sort it soon... i hope.. not that the disco gets used that much now.. be nice to get the 900+k's per tank back on a decent run!

    Thanks guys

    Gday Steve,

Yes I was reading a post before I replied to your, I dont know why I stuck that in there...Oh well they may read it and work it out..

Stupid question but you dont have a fuel leak on your system somewhere..

It may not be de-laminating as such but maybe collapsing, but would think you would get some smoke to tell you of the restriction..

    Goodluck with it..

I Ean... i thought that may of been it

As for leaks... i had the fuel pressure reg done recently so unusually it is as dry as a bone underneath and around the engine...

as for smoke? well its always been a bit smokey under 'load' due to the tombie chip.. always been good fun tho too...

i guess the hoses will have to come off for me to have a nosey at them..

The boost modulator is an easy thing to change.. but i would of thought the nanocom would of showed the boost being flat if it was hosed? nanocom shows a max of 1.3bar, just want to change then i know its done.

The only thing i have done to mine is clean the maf and the MAP (the sensor on the inlet manifold?) the MAP was caked in carbon and oil due to im guessing the egr... which will be the next thing to go.. on the deefer and disco. Have you checked your EGR to see if its stuck open or the modulator is playing up? dont have an egr its been missing for ages now ive cleaned the map also

Is the new injector harness for a reason or just something to eliminate? Saying that i have a stock of 2 at home.. just in case as we now have 2 td5's in the family... along with the rocker gasket the injector harness was supposedly changed twice by a certian LR steeler in sydney because of rough idle. when i changed a few injectors i noticed that the injector harness plug inside the cover was covered in ultra grey, by LR steeler, this makes me think its never been changed. its not showing signs of oil at the plug but again i want it changed for piece of mind. ive also got so very wierd spikes in the graphical viewer showing certian injectors as open load (faulted 254times)

One of us will sort it soon... i hope.. not that the disco gets used that much now.. be nice to get the 900+k's per tank back on a decent run!
