use the metal gasket and sealant LR Part Number STC50550
Very happy to know that my P Gasket is the cause of a coolant loss. Was thinking head gasket as I couldn't find any external leaks!
Should I use the metal gasket or just a sealant (what type?) to repair it?

I used the metal p gasket as well when I changed it over not long ago. Also put sealant as well as you will know they are buggers to get off so thought do it once and proper lol good to hear it's only the gasket and nothing major.
To get to the p-gasket you will have to remove the water pump, so might as well throw a new gasket and sealant on it as well.
You dont have to remove water pump. you only have to remove 3 bolts that run right through the housing and bolt to block where P gasket is. Replace these bolts as they rust and can be difficult to remove.
Replace the three bolts with cadnium plated ones, use genuine LR bolts and ultra blue the faces and anti-sieze the threads. It's important to get equal tension on all the bolts. Pat
When I did mine, I used the metal gasket with no sealer. I avoid using sealer when ever possible.
Scrape both surfaces really well to remove any pieces of old gasket and finish with wet-and-dry. A final wipe over then fit a fresh gasket. I very rarely have leaks at gaskets and when I do, it is due to rushing and poor preparation.

Bumping this back up, I had the water pump fail on the weekend, so ordered a P gasket too (but forgot the damned cad plated bolts...)
Anyway, the bolts were OK when pulled, just starting to corrode, and, yes, the P gasket had started to weep at the top too.....
Interesting that it was a composite gasket even though a late '98 build (the tech update including the metal gasket was issued Feb '99)
Some phosphoric acid on the bolts, cleaned up all the threads, a coat of marine grease (calcium sulfonate based) on the bolts and threads (calcium sulfonate beats rust like no other grease thickener) a new metal gasket with a light coat of Hylomar and note, with the upgrade to the metal gasket there is a revised bolt tension of 30Nm on the relevant bolts, ie, the 3 long ones, the 65mm one at the bottom and the two nuts.
The water pump bolts are still 25Nm/18lb/ft.
