    Which motor?
If its a 300tdi, my experience is that it will get worse reasonably quickly if its leaking out the vent hole in the bottom of the pump. Solution is a replacement pump. Think there is a thread in The Good Oil on how to replace them.

If it still has the plastic hose between the filter and the lift pump, then its a known cause of the inlet fitting cracking at the housing of the pump. The plastic hose is usually too tight, and puts strain on the pump inlet.
Replace that bit of plastic hose with some 1/4" fuel hose and a couple of hose clamps. Leave a bit of extra length so there isn't any strain on the pump inlet.

    x2.

Most likely replace lift pump, easy peasy job.

Or, don't worry too much, as even quite a large diesel leak appears a heck of a lot cleaner on the driveway than a very minor lube oil leak, especially on a windy sunny day, with a few China Nav leak stoppers.....

Not to suggest for one minute that you can't get both sorts of juice out of the lift pump, with a bit of serious hard work and neglect.....

The lift pump is mounted on the side of the block, so its possible for leaking diesel to get into the engine oil which dilutes the oil.

and when the diesel dilutes the oil it doesnt maintain pressure as well as it flows easier so gets squished out of bearings allowing metal on metal contact. Then just for poops'n'giggles it'll escape out of the turbo compressor seal and enter the combustion chamber which in turn makes the engine run faster... and the cycle compounds untill one of the bits that should be on the inside of the engine decides to make a break for the outside world.
