    Mystery noise

    I have a mystery noise on my County.
    Closest way I can describe it would be to say it sounds like a length of chain dangling on the road and bouncing - does that make sense? Seems to be related to road speed.

    Cant get it to happen when stationary, and the frequency of the jangling increases as road speed increases.
    Depressing the clutch while rolling doesn't affect the noise.

    If I was to guess a location, I'd say gearbox/bellhousing/engine/front axle area.
    Originally I thought it was a broken mount bracket on the exhaust where the pipe comes down from the turbo ( 200tdi fitted ) near the LH engine mount, but that doesn't fit with it seeming related to road speed.

    I've only just come back from giving the engine/gearbox a de-grease at the carwash so didn't want to crawl under while it was wet, but will have a good look tomorrow night.
    Any suggestions as to specific things to check would be appreciated.

    Maybe a stone between a disc rotor and mud shield or possibly a loose mudshield on the front diff pinion drive flange.

    Thanks Brian. I reckon you might have nailed it.
    Diff mudshield is solid as a rock, but the RH disc mudshield was quite jangly. May have even been jangling against the disc itself. Bolts were tight so I just gave it a bit of a bend away from the disc and it doesn't jangle any more.
    Will see if the noise is still there tomorrow.

    Bugger.

    Noise is still there when I drove it tonight Its got me stuffed as to what it could be.
    As usual the timing of these things is bad as I have it booked in for a roadworthy check tomorrow morning.
    Hopefully its not a case of jingle, jingle, jangle, crunch as a gearbox bearing destroys itself - or something equally as nasty.
    Reckon I could expect a couple of pages of defects if the mechanic has to walk home from the test drive

    Sounds like a really loose/dry chain on sprockets, or a dry bearing race where the cage has broken and the balls are banging into each other as it turns.

    My front drivers side wheel bearing sounded like what you describe when I first bought the County, there had been water in the hub and things started rusting. It was most noticeable when cornering.

    Well, haven't heard the noise for a couple of weeks.

    When the RWC inspection was done the guy found a loose bolt on the LH front radius arm. It was loose enough that the washer was rattling around with a couple of mm play.

    I replaced the bolt as it was worn, and haven't heard the noise since.

    Yep, had that exact one myself. Wasn't until mechanic had it on the hoist that he could see it, and that was after several return visits.
