    3.5 V8 with 350 Holley starting issue

    Hi All,

Sorry to bother you all, but I am out of my depth if it hasn't got an ECU and I cant type things into a PC...

We have basically finished our stage 1 and I tried to start it this evening - It was last run about 4 months ago or so.

It fired and ran for a couple of seconds but then stopped. It does this every time you try.

It has a brand new entire fuel system, from tank to lines, including the fuel (apart from the pump) and it all seems to work fine.

Fuel is pumping out at the carbie (350 Holley) when the line is removed, and you can see it squirting out of both jets in the top of the carbie when operating the throttle.

It also seems to have a decent spark, although so far I have only removed one plug to check.

It ran fine last time we started it.

What should I be looking for?

    Thanks!
    Pete

Check the float and the needle and seat in the fuel bowl, if its ever been ran on lpg the brass floats tend to split causing flooding, also check the jet and power valve sizes. On my rangie i had 59 jets and a 65 power valve which was about spot on for a balance of power / economy.

How have you regulated the fuel to the baby Holley ? regulater on the feed or the return.?
IS it Flooding or Starving ? (pull the plugs and have a look !!) Sounds like the squirters are working but they could be squirting water instead of clean fuel ,Pull the bowl off , clean out the idle orifices and main jets , flush it out , If that dont work you probably have a big throttle shaft vacuum leak , discard Holley and fit a 38mm DGMS WEBER ,or even the foulcan XEF 32/36 Weber,
There are just so many possibilities of what could be wrong everything is guess .
PS mate they aint Jets , its your accelerator pump circuit , governed by the sqirter cam, the diphragm size and the clearance adjustment.,

    Hi Guys,

    Ok,

It has never been run on gas afaik.

With regards to a regulator. It doesn't have one. The pump provides a maximum of 6psi according to the facet website, and the Holley brochure I downloaded last night says 5-7 psi so that should be ok I think. (I can fit one if you think it would help)

It also doesnt seem to have provision for a fuel return line from the carbie, although if I am missing something stupid please let me know!

The squirters are squirting clean fuel, I have checked.

I can't check the float level as the engine needs to be running to do that.

I will pull the bowl apart and clean everything out this evening.

    Thanks
    Pete

When it does run, how does it run? I mean, does it run normally then just die, does it run rough and cough and then kind of bounce to a stop (umm, I mean irregular firing in the cylinders)?

Does unburnt petrol come out the exhaust, or any smoke?

Have you pulled any plugs to see what they look like?

    Is the battery fully charged?

Is the alternator producing any charge?

    Is the timing set correctly?

Have you checked the points/condenser? Does it have them or electronic LED like Mallory, or electronic magnet like Pertronix?

Are there any dead shorts in the ignition loom?

Of course you can check the float level with the facet pump running, just unscrew the level plug in the side of the float chamber and check that's where the fuel level is. If it pours out the it's way over.

For the second or 2 it does run it sounds spot on. No backfires etc.

Removed them all and cleaned and gapped and refitted. Were all a bit black before

    Is the battery fully charged?

Yes 100% It spins over pretty fast on the starter motor

Is the alternator producing any charge?

    Yes

    Is the timing set correctly?

I havent changed it and it ran when i got it

Its got an electronic ignition setup. Havnet checked brand but will do.

Are there any dead shorts in the ignition loom?

    Not that I can see.

I tried to do this but may have made it worse! I have removed it and pulled it apart now. Will post some mroe details of my sequence of issues and some pics below shortly.

Ok, I took the float chamber off the Holley earlier after fiddling about for a bit with the float level. (not convinced I improved anything!)

I then put it back together, and there was no improvement. It did however seem to pump fuel out of the part highlighted in the pic below!

So I have removed it again and taken it apart!

I think I am going to put a kit through it and see if that helps, after giving it a very good clea out. I will put a few more pics below in case ayone can spot anything!

Fuel should not come out of there sounds like the float level is stuffed (gets too much fuel).

Take out sight screw and make sure the tinniest dribble of fuel comes out when at pressure.

You can set your float level when its apart and then fine adjust once fitted.

I have another manual here I can send but Im guessing its the same as what you have.

Holley will run at 7psi (standard stage 1 pump)
