    lt95 to r380

I'm looking at an 82 2 door rr. Took it for a drive and apart from the usual slow changing required for the lt95 it was hard to change down from 2nd to 1st and had a slight whirring noise which would occur about 5 seconds after taking the foot off the go pedal.

Is the R380 a straight swap? I much prefer the shifting of that box and would like to also change over the hand brake to a S1 disco version.

Or should I just stick with the lt95

Stick with the LT95 as it a more reliable gear bag.
The noise on backing off I guess would be wear in the transfercase.
To go to the R380 I think you would have to use the later transfercase and I dont know what issuses there is with mounting and linkages.
If you find a R380 second hand it is going to be worn out anyhow and in need of a rebuild .
You may as well rebuild the transmission made for the vehicle.
The rover V8 is a flexible motor and the difference to performance is not much between the the to gearboxes in the real world.
The slow gear change of the LT95 is to do more with a heavy motor flywheel and long gear shift throw which I would have any day over a five speed R380 which drops out brass at every oil drain and wears out the syncros quickly any how leaving the driver with harder gear/ slower gear changes any how after a period of time.

the later lt95, which will be in the RR that you are looking at, has a much better and tighter gear selector than the early ones. The differences of a later box will not be amazingly better as compared to an earlier lt95 and none of them is a strong. Yours will have better gear ratios than the early boxes too. IMHO leave it alone its a great unit and you have the best version of them all.

2nd to 1st will always be difficult. The internal design of these gearbags is morris oxford era, Simple, but they are STRONG. I wouldn't recommend changing it out for an R380.

The transfer case is the only section that is prone to excessive wear in the thrust washers if pushing lots of HP or Nm through it. Shafts and gears are near on nuclear holocaust proof.

The Suffix C trans in the 1982 onward 2 and 4 door is the best incarnation of the LT95. The 110/County version in 1985 had the same park brake assembly virtually as the R380 / LT230. The rear output husing from a 110/County box can be fitted to allow fitting of the larger park brake. IMHO a very worthwhile upgrade.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

thanks, sounds like lt95 is the way to go then. The engine is pushing bigger HP but not massive. HP is around 110kw at the wheels with big rubber. It turns 35's on standard gearing very easily and your not searching the gears to keep it moving.
