I have taken the one out of my D2 (pretty much exactly the same as D1) and had it back in within 2 hours i think, might have been an even shorter amount of time, its a really easy job, takes a bit of swearing lining it back up when you put it back on but other than that should be fine.

D1 TDI300 Auto. Transfer case change out??

Hi all thanks for the reply's earlier.
The next Question i have, is do i have to remove the hole gearbox or can i just remove the transfer case. Anything i need to lookout for, and any special tools i may need.
    Thanks Matt & Jo.

The transfer case will unbolt from the transmission.

Replace all seals before fitting the replacement transfer case (gearbox output, transfer input, transfer intermediate shaft o rings).

Be very careful refitting the transfer case as it is easy to snag the transfer input seal on the gearbox output shaft.

The best thing to do for re-fitting the t/case is make some guide rods out of extra long bolts, cut the heads off and slot the ends with a hacksaw so you can unscrew them after you've slid the t/case in.

This ensures you don't wreck the input shaft seal on reassembly.

X2! 2 guide bolts needed, M10 by about 200mm long.
Also when I did a transfer case I made a little platform to bolt to the bottom of the transfer case, so it sits level on a trolley jack. Much easier that way.

guide bolts are a must, take it from someone who learn the hard way.
