Other than the oil seal on shafts I don't know of seals with sharp edges. I'd say that your O ring has just been pressed into what looks like a triangular shape.
Is there a recess to accept the O ring?
Folks,
Discovered a leak from the oil extension cover / adaptor; the cylindrical housing which the oil cooler line attaches to, which also covers the oil thermostat. It had what appeared to be a crushed o-ring seal - tiangular in cross-section, which was tired, so I replaced it with a nitrile O-ring of similar size. This worked for a while, then began leaking again. So I tightened it a bit further and stupidly cracked one of the mouting lugs offI later discovered that my O-ring had cracked (crushed it too much)causing the weaping.
I've since obtained a second hand replacement housing, and I'm using another O-ring only this time I've just gently nipped it up. But I was hoping someone might know if a normal O-ring is OK here or is there a special (triangular cross section) o ring I need to source ?
Thanks in adv,
Taz.

They are regular section 'O' ring, it's just that the face of the t/stat housing is machined with a taper so the O ring conforms to that shape.
And go get a viton one. The NBR one you've fitted won't last long due to heat.
Whenever I've ordered/asked for Viton around here for anything I get blank expressions, they are special order from Newcastle or Sydney, if I'm lucky
When I order Land Rover O rings I just order OE ones these days, it's far less aggro and I get them in an air bag the next day......
Yikes! Who are you dealing with?
