Thread: Do I need to remove the viscous fan when repairing the P Gasket?

I did this on my disco 95 300 tdi easily with out the removal of the viscous fan. that was following the factory manual

I've used a Bahco adjustable spanner. They are a very narrow design and easily fit in the gap. They are well made and the jaw doesn't wobble. The one I got has a wide opening jaw (about 35mm from memory).

Fit the spanner over the nut, give it a short sharp tap with a hammer (remember this is a left hand thread, so tap accordingly), then the fan is loose enought to unscrew.

The Land Rover special tool, which I have used since, makes it easier as it has the correct width jaw, has a slight bend to fit in well behind the fan, and has a longer handle, so you're not working close to the fan cowl.

The 'special tool' is a standard 32mm cranked fan hub spanner, available for a few $ from any spare parts store across the country.

Worthwhile adding to the tool kit, and as Michael said, they spin right off.

I removed mine when doing this a few weeks back as a) it's easy to do and b) it gives more space to work, like when undoing the p/s pump and juggling that.
