Probably a good idea to replace all gaskets including head gasket.
Don't fit Zues gears, they appear to be nothing but trouble.
HI Folks,
Just a couple of questions on the 300tdi.I just came by this motor with ZF auto & LT230 which is supposed to have around 180-200k onit.It is running fine but as I'm going to remove it & put it into my '93 Rangy I was wondering if while it out & sitting on the shed floor and is easy to work on should I consider the following jobs.Remove the head & get it freshened, pressure tested & hardness tested, checked for straight & fit new gasket. Also I would get to check the condition of the bores.
Also does anyone have feedback (good or bad) on the Zeus timing gears which I found on the links on this site?As well I have been told a 3inch Exhaust will make an improvment.I will be fitting LP gas injection to the motor.Any info or suggestions will be appreciated.
Paul

Hi Nick, the Zues timing gears have now been in 4 approx 80k, Ive put about 15k of those on. No probs yet, but Im still scared.
Cheers Dean.
Ooops, sorry Paul, are there now 2 Lone Rangies on here now.
Cheers Dean.
Google Zeus gears and Turner Engineering. Turner commisioned an engineering report on the gears.
As for work on the engine while out? Depends on how much money you are trying to save! If you are trying to save money, put it in and takes your chances. Many 300Tdi's around with those kms or more without problems.
One of the mechanics on here recommends doing the 300 Tdi head gasket at about 170k as a prophylactic measure. Mine is not there yet so have not been faced with the dilema of taking the head of a trouble free engine just in case.
I like to do the tdi (and all the v8's) head gaskets at the 200K Km service, not because you HAVE to do them then or the world will end but because its a nice easy service interval and for most users is about the 5/6 year mark when you should be refreshing/replacing the radiator and a few other things.

If you've benefited from one or more of my posts please remember, your taxes paid for my skill sets, I'm just trying to make sure you get your monies worth.
If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
I'd be considering a torque converter overhaul while its on the bench.
The lockup clutch started to slip in mine at just over 200K, and someone else commented that theirs had gone at about the same age.
Normal recommendation from the auto trans places is if you have to remove the trans to fix the converter then O/H the trans while its out (given its about $800 in labour for remove/refit).
I removed/refitted mine myself, and the converter overhaul with H/D kevlar lockup clutch cost me around $300. Transmission is still fine 30K later.
If you do lots of towing maybe consider a 3rd gear lockup mod while the trans is out.
