    what the heck is this?

ive just removed the drive flange where i expected to see the old seal, and i'm faced with this weird metal "retainer". (marked 8HA-019-5 and RETAINERS)

i have not read or seen anything about this anywhere.
can someone tell me what to do with this? i was almost tempted to drill a self tapper into it to lever it out like someone said to do with the old seal. but then thought twice!
this is so frustrating! i wish i knew about this so this job could be done already!!!

Just a steel shield on the seal (at a guess, never pulled a Sals down and the D60 was a looong time ago, but have seen plenty of seals that look like that )

i need to know how to get it out, do i need to re-use it or can i destroy the stupid thing?
it's stuck in there good. i'll drill a screw into it and lever it out with a claw hammer if i'm allowed to...

You should of marked the position that it was at originally and then counted the number of turns it took to get it off.
That way it would go back to exactly where it was.

EPC is showing a 'gasket' between the flange and seal ??

    could be it ??

But the manual shows the seal, sans 'gasket' and the seal drawing looks a lot like what you have.

Where's your new seal to compare ?

can you get the small legs of a slide hammer on the inside of the flange and pull it off ?

    another screeching halt...

looks like i'm off the road for a few days again. i've got the wrong seal.
FRC8220 is not the right seal for my rear diff.

after destroying/removing that metal thing and discovering that it is in fact the oil seal i then quickly realised that my new 8220 seal is wayyyy too small.

i found this thread, very handy, but i still don't know what part number i now need.
    Salisbury Rear Axle.. Pinion Seal

    I've got a 110 93 model, the VIN is LA########

thats interesting. how do i work out what model diff i have?
have a closer look at this seal.

doesn't look like the exploded view gasket and seal, it's all one piece.

Going off your VIN I'd say you need AEU2515. You could always ask your parts supplier if you could purchase both, then return the one you don't need.

    Cheers,
