Front or rear mounted rear shocks

Front or rear mounted rear shocks ? I think around 1986 the RRC went from one front mounted rear shock and one rear mounted rear shock to two front mounted rear shocks . Does anybody know why , and what are the Pros and Cons of each method ?

My 1985 is both forwards. The changeover was supposed to be 86 model year (which my 85 could be), but who knows when it actually happened.

One of my mates reckon it was a relic from leaf sprung days when one forward and one backward would help control axle tramp a little. I can't think of a better explanation.

Okay . a relic from the days of Leaf springs . Sounds a bit strange seeing it was probably specced in the late 60's . Allright then , then why the move to 2 front mounted shocks after 15 years of manufacture ?
Perhaps seeing the drivers side was the rear mount , moving it to the front now gave access to the new filter and filter sedimentor for the introduction of the Diesel VM and later the the EFI ,? just a guess !!
More curious to see what the effect to chassis / suspension dynamics the changing of shock mounting actually makes .

The geometry does change differently for each damper in a front/back system as the suspension cycles. But I don't think it'd be noticable at all when driving.
