    Weber carby for S2A

Hello there chaps, I was just wondering what the pros and cons of fitting a Weber 34ich Carby onto a s2A 2.25 petrol engine, as against fitting a repair kit to the existing Solex.

The Weber reputedly gets better economy, possibly at the expense of performance.

My view is that the Solex is possibly the best carburetter, but offset against this is the fact that all of them are around fifty years old and parts are a bit hard to come by. It is likely that it may need more than a repair kit - it is likely to have a worn throttle shaft and the throttle body is likely to need rebushing as well. And other linkages are probably also worn. This is all fixable, however, as long as the carburetter body is not corroded or otherwise damaged.

small fuel bowl doesnt like big angles and like all webbers you really need to run headers so you dont suffer chronic fuel evaporation.

    apart from that, fine

I had a weber on my Ambulance, now have the original Solex.

The Weber gave great economy and was generally reliable, but in the end the fuel vaporising issues drove me mental.

It really made the vehicle impossible to drive on warm/hot days.

It's not worth the hassle IMHO.

The 2.25 is my favourate LR engine and I see no gain whatsovever in going from a 36mm carby down to a 32mm model. Pat

Thanks to all those who replied. PAT303 are you referring to the Stromberg carby as commonly fitted to the early Holden straight sixes (e.g. 202 red motor) ?

OK Pat, yes that Stromberg (from the old Holden grey 215 engine) has 1&1/32 " stamped on the side of the carby. And if I fit a variable main jet, probably still available from Repco, this could be the go. Thanks, Harry

I tried the 34ICH on my 2.25P It idled smoothly but was super gutless but it may have been jetted incorrectly. I quickly gave up on it. I also tried Solex's and Zenith's. I had the best results with a Holden Stromberg once I fitted an adjustable main jet. This carby, with a set of extractors and and a new Ducellier distributor made the 2.25 go really well. Surprisingly well.....

The adjustable main jet is essential. Its also very sensitive to small changes in adjustment. The Stromberg sits a bit taller than the other carbs and you may need to modify the inlet elbow slightly with a hammer to clear the bonnet.
