I have just pulled the centre console out of my Disco to try and access the reverse light switch to try and get the lights working for roadworthy. I have found the switch, and upon removal, have discovered that the switch itself actually works. While trying to figure out what actually triggers the switch, I removed a plate from around the base of the gearstick to get a better view. There appears to be some kind of actuator unit on the LHS, but when selecting reverse, there is no movement from it to trigger the switch. This is all assumption on my behalf and if anyone knows what is actually supposed to happen, could you please enlighten me. I am unsure whether this (actuator?) is a serviceable item, or if my problem involves replacing this. If so, could someone please supply me with the name of this part so that I may get one ordered. Thanks for your replies.

There's a little plunger that looks kinda like a 30mm clout type nail. That is what throws the switch. I'll try to find a pic somewhere for you.
I had to make a new one after my bias plate cracked. I re-welded it and took the Disco for a drive without the covers on (a different experience being able to see the road!) and unbeknownst to me the plunger fell out during the drive.
Thanks Macman, I have (hopefully) enclosed a picture of the offender, and by what you are saying, there should be some sort of pin that exits from the slotted brass section located above the spring.
Plunger has been ordered thanks. But while we're on the topic of LT77 gearboxes, my CDL light doesn't illuminate when I lock it, and now that I have the centre console out and can see the top of the gearbox, I have discovered a pair of wires that aren't connected. Could this be the problem, and if so, where should they be connected to? Thanks for your help in diagnosing my problems.
